Decoding the Tree of Life - Maya Lin (2021)
In recent times, we think back to the incredible opportunity we had to assist world-renowned artist, Maya Lin, with creating ‘The Tree of Life.’ AO Glass intrepidly provided over 15,000 glass spheres that were wrapped around a uniquely-designed metal armature in the the UPenn Medical Center’s atrium. The piece relies on lighting that seems to cascade throughout the hospital’s pavillion, representing serenity and healing for those finding themselves in the center. A four-month timeline meant that AO was all hands-on-deck for this process.
It was truly an incredible opportunity. I recently got the chance to speak with Tove and Rich, as they recalled their time in Philly when they visited the hospital. Tove described entering the hospital’s main hallway as an ethereal, religious experience. Witnessing the light envelop the massive metal structure, as it sat in the center of the building was “breathtaking.” Their anticipation during the cab ride over had completely dissipated in the presence of the Tree’s majesty. Seven Days also had a chance to catch up with AO in a 2021 interview, which I highly recommend reading here.

Rich emphasized the importance of having such an installment in a hospital, and his words, both in the article and to me, revealed the deep sentiment behind this project. There was also a vital message in this symbolic, representative piece that encapsulated the work of so many brilliant minds— utilizing countlesss elements of creative mastery and foresight. A deep singificance exists in representing creativity through this worldly piece, implying that it is within all of us. As a collective of vast creative minds and cultures, we are proud to represent AO Glass and the essence of Vermont’s artistic community through the Tree of Life.
