The Making of a Rocks Glass
The original handblown whiskey glass was the first product in our Vermont Collection of glassware, literally branded with the outline of Vermont. It’s a versatile go-to glass to have around the home; a substantial, high-quality tumbler that you can be proud to own - and give as a gift. It’s crafted with care in the heart of the Green Mountain State, as seen in the pictures below.
Born of fire
All of our handmade glass products begin in a crucible filled with 2,100° F molten glass.
Gathered & shaped
Molten glass is collected at the end of a blow pipe and then shaped by a “block,” a wooden half-bowl with a handle.
Fitting the mold
The glass is blown and rotated within our custom mold, creating the final shape of the glass.
Cut off
The glass is prepared to separate from the blow pipe, as we shape a neck with metal “jacks.”
Reheated
Removed from the pipe, the base is torched to soften the glass in order to add our Vermont stamp.
Stamped
The stamp of (Vermont) approval. Our custom-made metal stamp is applied quickly; it’s only a matter of seconds until the base cools off.
The result
Final stamp in place. The edges and reflection of the stamp make for an intriguing play of light once the glass is filled with your favorite pour.
Last step
After spending the night in the kiln, the glass is ready for hot-popping. It spins on a turntable with a flame directed at a small score mark on the side, when suddenly the top portion of the glass "pops" right off. Another flame heats and smooths the edge. One more night in the kiln to remove any internal tension, and the glass is ready to use.
